Modular Wall - Design Lab 2

The overall design of the unit was complex. Learning the accurate geometry of the unit was by far the largest struggle for our team. Overcoming this was a relief.

It all begins with an idea. Our idea started with a simple, mass-heavy unit. We utilized a simple female-to-female slotting design that we would carry forward to our final design.

Since the slotting technique is very angular, we thought it would make sense if we made our next design of our unit angular.

This is two of our units stacked against each other

A New Challenge

After seeing our genius, our professor challenged us to make our design assembly interesting. She suggested a unit that could be folded together, like a cardboard box. This led to a variety of new issues but taught us a lot along the way.

Of course, we found ways to make this prompt work. A group member broke the geometry of our unit down into a flat sheet and started folding.

Now the question was: “What would the material be?”

As a group, we discussed a wide range of materials. We thought about aluminum sheet metal, cardboard, and even carpet.
